September Swim
He appointed the moon for seasons; The sun knows it’s going down. (Psalm 104:19)
Summer is ending. Autumn has arrived. The days will be getting cool, but today the sun is still hot upon my face, and the ocean is calm and crystal clear. I dive in. As I splash and float, I wonder; is this it? The last swim before it gets cold?
I am tempted to let this sadden me. But then, I can compare the changes of seasons on the calendar to the changes that happen in my life. Each adjustment would have their joys and sorrows. One thing is clear, God was with me all the time. And I can depend on Him. God, who appointed the moon for seasons, has divine appointments for me!
I’ve learned not to fear the ending of whatever is “summer”, but to embrace the new “autumn”.
As I walk back to my car, I pause to enjoy the beauty around me. I am filled with appreciation for the moment, the day, and even the coming dusk. And I find a poem forming upon my lips;
September Swim
Salty wet upon my skin,
Soft sun upon the rim
of my brow.
A swim in September.
Summer has set upon the deep,
Warm days are hard to keep
and enjoy.
Sea glass in September.
Salty wet upon my face
fading light upon the grace
of the sea.
See, it sparkles still!
I smile.
To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven: (Ecclesiastes 3:1)
